Regional distribution in female representation in US otolaryngology faculty

Objectives To quantify the current proportion of women in otolaryngology at different levels professorship and determine whether these proportions differ by US region. Methods Academic rank gender all ACGME-accredited programs United States were determined from departmental websites, Doximity, LinkedIn November 2021 to March 2022. Individuals then further organized using Census Bureau-designated regions. Results Among 2682 faculty positions 124 programs, held 706 (26.3%) positions. Female representation was highest assistant level, with holding 286 (37.2%) out a total 769. At associate 141 (27.6%) 511 The largest disparity is seen full level; only 69 (13.6%) 508 women. Out every region rank, West had no significant difference percentages men (p = .710). professors Northeast significantly lower than that our reference group (the South; β −10.9, p .020). Conclusions Otolaryngology has exhibited great progress increasing female representation, reaching parity. However, gap other still leaves much be desired, particularly senior ranks. lack otolaryngologists ranks detrimental mentorship junior faculty, residents, medical students. Renewed efforts should made decrease South, Northeast, level.
